DreamHost: WordPress 4.0.1 – Security Release

WordPress 4.0.1 is now available as a security release for all previous versions of WordPress, and is being applied now to all sites who allow for Background Updates in WordPress, as well as any who use our Auto Update via Panel.

In fact… you may have already been emailed about this by your install.

You can read the release notes for 4.0.1, and this release is coordinated with a Drupal release, as both projects share a potential vulnerability (due to an issue in PHP) that could cause a denial of service attack. The upgrade applies to WordPress versions 4.0.1, 3.9.3, 3.8.5, and 3.7.5.

As a reminder, WordPress itself performs background updates of all minor releases, since WordPress 3.7 was released in 2013. That means even if you have disabled auto updates via panel (which you’d never do, because updating is the best thing since sliced bread), WordPress will still upgrade your 3.7, 3.8, and 3.9 installs to the latest, most secure, version.

If for whatever reason you went and disabled all possible update methods to your site, please log in to your WordPress site now, head to Dashboard → Updates and simply click “Update Now.” It’s just that easy.

Speaking of updates …. WordPress 4.1 is due out in December! Now’s the time to have a look at your sites and make sure all your plugins and themes are up-to-date in preparation for some cool new features. You may even want to upgrade your PHP settings in panel to PHP 5.4, just to be extra cool.
