On September 9th, a hard drive failed on mail3. We have these servers set up with multiple drives (in a RAID array) so that we can lose a drive without losing any data. We replaced this drive but the server could not complete the rebuild of the array. That meant that if we lost another drive, we would lose data and we definitely didn’t want that.
In order to keep this from happening, we relocated all data to a temporary server, while we created a permanent solution.
This Saturday, September 15th, starting at 1 AM EDT, all accounts on mail3 will be moved to the new server, mail18. If your mail is currently running on mail3, you may need to change some settings in order to send, receive, or access your mail with us:
Firstly, if your DNS is hosted with us, we will automatically update your records for you, however you may experience momentary downtime. We expect that this should last no longer than 5 minutes, while our DNS servers update themselves.
That said, if you have domains that have their DNS hosted elsewhere, please change the following records accordingly:
- MX record currently set to “mail3.hostexcellence.com” should be changed to “mail18.hostexcellence.com”
- CNAME records for mail.DOMAIN.com currently set to “mail3.opentransfer.com” should be changed to “mail18.opentransfer.com”
Please let us know if you have any further questions about this, either through a ticket, phone call, chat, or message directly here on the blog! Have a great weekend!
