GreenGeeks: Servers now available in Phoenix

GreenGeeks is expanding. Since inception, we’ve been provisioning servers for our US-based services at our Chicago data center. As of today, we’ve added a second location and are now provisioning servers in Phoenix, Arizona!

The new data center is fully automated so we’re able to provide the same seamless service to you. To view details about our data centers, please visit our data center & servers page. Customers will be provisioned both in our Chicago and Phoenix data centers depending on availability.

If you want to run a test on the network that we have there, here’s the test IP: 108.178.56.206

DreamHost: Network Improvement Series Maintenance #3 Wednesday May 30 10pm PDT 4 hours – Upgrading Border Hardware at our Garland DC (RESOLVED)

We will be attempting to reschedule our previously postponed network maintenance to Wednesday May 30th. This maintenance is dependent on provider upgrades so we will have to set a “Go” or “No Go” on this particular maintenance. The decision to “Go or No Go” will be on Tuesday May 29th, however we are fully committed to perform this maintenance if our provider upgrades are complete.

We will be conducting planned maintenance on our Garland border router starting at Wednesday May 30th at 10pm Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). We expect the maintenance work to be completed by 11pm PDT, however for planning purposes we are specifying a 4 hour maintenance period through May 31st 2am PDT.
Here is the sequence of expected events during maintenance:
– Maintenance in our Garland data center will start between 10 – 10:30pm PDT, resulting in all web hosting services in that data center being offline;
– A new border router that has been set up and prepared for operation will be connected to the network and tested, with a potential duration of 45 minutes of service interruption, for the testing to be completed;
– Once the testing is completed and any issues are addressed to make the router fully operational, network services will be restored in Garland and all web hosting services will be back online; we expect this to occur by 11:30pm PDT, however it is possible that network services will not be restored until May 31st 1am PDT.
– In the event that the new router does not pass all tests by midnight PDT, we will restore services on the current network router hardware, so that in any scenario, all network services are restored by 12 midnight PDT.

Update Thursday May 31st 1:50am PDT: The first step, which involved rebalancing our traffic, was a success. We are however rolling back the hardware upgrade. We were not 100% comfortable with the progress that we made during the maintenance window. We will be rescheduling the hardware part of the upgrade as soon as we confident we can get through the issues we noticed today. All services are now restored. Thank you for your patience during this maintenance window.

Update Thursday May 31st 1:20am PDT: Some services are not available right now. We are attempting to finalize this change by 1:30. Thank you again for your patience during this maintenance window.

Update Thursday May 31st 1:10am PDT: We realize that service is down again and we are restoring now. Service will be restored within 5 minutes.

Update Thursday May 31st 12:50am PDT: We are live on the upgraded hardware. We are still working to make sure everything is in order and working as expected.

Update Thursday May 31st 12:42am PDT: Final attempt is starting now. Our cutback process has been flawless on getting us re-established so we are trying one more time. We apologize for the multiple attempts and we are limiting downtime to a max of 10 minutes. Panel will be inaccessible during our final attempt. Please bare with us as we try to finalize Network Improvement Series Maintenance #3.

Update Thursday May 31st 12:28am PDT: We have one more configuration change to push through so we will be going dark for roughly 5 minutes. Our rollback is confirmed to work so we can rollback quickly if we determine there are still further issues.

Update Thursday May 31st 12:18am PDT: We are currently dark in the data center and are working on restoring service. Please note that panel is also down. Apologies that this was not an announced expectation of the change. Please hang in there and we will have service restored shortly.

Update Thursday May 31st 12:10am PDT: Okay we are switching to the new hardware now. This is our second attempt. If this one fails we will cutback immediately. Our cutback plan is already in place but we are expecting this to go smoothly. We are expecting less than 10 minutes of service interruption.

Update Wednesday May 30th 11:50pm PDT: We have yet to experience any outages. Hardware upgrade has not occurred yet as we wait for further route normalization. We were previously ready to make the switch when we noticed some route issues. Once that is cleared up we will switch the hardware. Previous hardware cut over was temporarily aborted.

Update Wednesday May 30th 11:15pm PDT: We are cutting over now, please standby for service interruption. We will do our best to minimize the impact of this upgrade.

Update Wednesday May 30th 11:00pm PDT: We are ready to upgrade the hardware. There has been no service interruption to this point of the maintenance. At the hardware upgrade we are expecting minimal service interruption.

Update Wednesday May 30th 10:40pm PDT: First step is complete however we are waiting for traffic patterns to normalize prior to proceeding with the hardware upgrade. There has been no service interruption during this first step.

Update Wednesday May 30th 10:20pm PDT: First steps of the upgrade are being executed as I type this update. This part of the update is not expected to cause any service interruptions. We are monitoring support as well as testing these changes as we make them. Once step one is complete the actual router hardware for the border will be replaced.

Update Wednesday May 30th 10:05pm PDT: We are roughly 5 minutes from making our first changes. Final work for the first step of the upgrade is still being completed before making changes live.

Update Wednesday May 30th 9:50pm PDT: Our network engineers are on site and we are getting ready to roll out the maintenance. We will be sure to keep you updated as we progress on this upgrade.

Update Wednesday May 30th 6:00pm PDT: Tonight’s maintenance is going to be performed as scheduled. We will be starting maintenance at 10pm but do not expect possible service interruptions until roughly 11pm. We will be keeping you abreast of the maintenance with periodic updates starting around 9:50pm tonight.

Update Tuesday May 29th 8:00pm PDT: We will proceed with Network Improvement Series Maintnance #3 as scheduled for May 30th at 10pm. Early tomorrow we will be performing tests to ensure all fiber and facilities are ready to go. If there are any further issues deterring us from acting on this maintenance we will make that determination well before the 10pm start time. Thank you for your continued patience during these series of Network Upgrades.

GreenGeeks: PHP 5.3 Server Updates

About a month ago, we wrote an article about some changes that were being made to the PHP versions across our fleet of servers. We have made some changes to the procedure for using either PHP 5.2 or 5.3. Over the past few weeks, we have been making changes to our servers in order to make 5.3 the default PHP version for new customers. For our existing customers, you are being notified via email when this change is made on the server you are on. If you are currently using PHP 5.2, we are adding the following line to your htaccess to make sure that continues to happen:

AddHandler php5_2-wrap .php

For those now wanting to use PHP 5.3, you may simply remove that line from your htaccess file. For those currently using the 5.3 handler, there is nothing for you to do and PHP 5.3 will continue to be your PHP version.

Rest assured that your desired PHP version will remain the same, and only those who want to upgrade to PHP 5.3 will need to make the change to their htaccess file. We expect all of our servers to be using this system by the middle of June. If you have any questions about these changes, we are always here to help. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
