We will be upgrading servers in the order listed above. Our test runs went relatively smoothly so we do not expect any issues, but we will be watching these upgrades closely just the same.

We apologize for the downtime these upgrades will cause and we will do our best to limit the downtime to just the time it takes to do the upgrade.

DreamHost: Distributed Denial of Service Attack causing networking issues on SEVERAL machines (RESOLVED)

Our initial calculations were off. This outage is impacting more machines than we anticipated. If your machine is down at the moment, you are likely affected by this outage. Sorry that I could not provide a list of all machines.

Our admin team is working on the matter and hopes to have it resolved in the very near future. We’ll keep this post updated as information becomes available. Please note that the servers themselves are not compromised (this sort of attack utilizes exploits of outdated applications installed by users to launch an overwhelming number of data requests which bogs down the networking on the servers involved – the distributed nature of the attacks make them very difficult to fix as it’s not just a matter of blocking a single IP or IP range).

Update Sept. 30th, 10:05am PST: We have confirmed that this issue has been resolved, thank you for your patience. – John

Update Sept. 30th, 9:55am PST: The admin team has informed me that they have the situation under control now. We are confirming this before considering the issue resolved though. – John

Update Sept. 30th, 9:30am PST: Our admin team is still working feverishly to resolve this issue as quickly as possible (unfortunately the nature of this sort of attack is causing it to take longer than we would like). – John

DreamHost: Shared web server ‘reykjavik’ offline for unscheduled file-system check

The shared web hosting server ‘reykjavik’ has been taken offline for an unscheduled file-system check.  The server rebooted to a read-only file-system, which is a sign of issues with the drives, so this check is being performed to verify the integrity of the data on the server.  We will update this post as this process continues and once we have a realistic ETA!

Update Sept. 30th, 7:30am PST: The file system check is now at 28% of the way through the first pass. – John

Update Sept. 30th, 7:05am PST: The file system check is at 21% of the way through the first pass. – John

Update Sept. 30th, 6:32am PST: The file system check is at 8% and progressing just fine, we’ll keep this post updated as it continues. – John

DreamHost: VPS host homie-vserver197 down for unscheduled file system check (RESOLVED)

Our datacenter admins noticed this vserver host machine go read-only a short time ago. After a reboot, it seemed ok again, but then it happened again. Unfortunately we will need to run a file system check on this server to correct issues that are causing this. We will update this post regularly with updates on how far along it is, but unfortunately an ETA is more difficult due to file system checks varying with number of files, size of the partition and how full it is.

The affected VPS servers are:

ps11126 ps11137 ps11277 ps11323 ps11594 ps11599 ps12547 ps14044 ps14047 ps14049 ps14050 ps14055 ps14107 ps14236 ps14471 ps14483 ps15212 ps15218 ps16414 ps16995 ps18375 ps18445 ps18447 ps19297 ps20194 ps22433 ps22758 ps24132 ps36902 ps36926 ps36957 ps36960 ps36972 ps36986 ps36990 ps38608 ps38681 ps38690 ps38697 ps38718 ps38724 ps38730 ps38733 ps38734 ps38738 ps38739 ps38743 ps38744 ps38746 ps38747 ps38748 ps38750 ps38752 ps38753 ps38754 ps38755 ps38756 ps38757 ps38760 ps38762 ps38764 ps38765 ps38766 ps38770 ps38772 ps38773 ps38774 ps38775 ps38776 ps38777 ps38778 ps38779 ps38780 ps38781 ps38782 ps38784 ps38787 ps38788 ps38789 ps38790 ps38791 ps38792 ps38795 ps38796 ps38797 ps38798 ps38799 ps38800 ps38802 ps38803 ps38804 ps38805 ps38806 ps38809 ps38812 ps38818 ps38819 ps38820 ps38821 ps38822 ps38829 ps38830 ps38832 ps38834 ps38838 ps38843 ps38846 ps38847 ps38850 ps38855 ps38858 ps38859 ps38862 ps38867 ps38868 ps38874 ps38878 ps38880 ps38881 ps38886 ps38889 ps38890 ps38891 ps39348 ps58381 ps58385 ps58463 ps58492 ps58498 ps59864 ps60848 ps61109 ps62589 ps62592 ps6821 ps6822 ps6825 ps6827 ps7006 ps7142 ps7176 ps7377 ps7421 ps7840 ps7864 ps8305 ps8710 ps8828 ps9038 ps9501 ps9544

Update Sept. 29th, 5:10pm PST: The file system check has finished and all guest VPS machines are now back up. Should you have any issues with your VPS still being down, please contact our support team and we will be glad to check on it for you. -Oscar

Update Sept. 29th, 3:45pm PST: Unfortunately, we don’t have specific progress on how far this is along the FSCK process, but it is still processing smoothly. It is now in pass 1c. We’re trying to resolve this issue as soon as possible, but unfortunately, we have to wait for this FSCK process to complete before anything else can be done. We’ll update this status post with more info when we have it. -dan w

Update Sept. 29th, 2:45pm PST: We’re through pass 1a and 1b and the FSCK is still running smoothly. Unfortunately, we don’t have a specific ETA on when we expect this to finish, but it has been processing with no issues. As mentioned in our last update, we make note of the passes as 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d and then finally 2. For the most part 1a is the longest part of a file system check, so hopefully we’re nearing the completion of this process. We’ll update this post again shortly with more information. -dan w

Update Sept. 29th, 1:45pm PST: The File System Check currently at 63.7% on Pass 1a. Please be aware that there are 5 passes in a file system check. We are working on ways to have your sites and files available while a VPS host is down for a file system check, but unfortunately we do not have that capability yet. We will continue to monitor the file system check and get this working for you as soon as possible. -Brian S
