Due to the troubles with our interior routing that caused this weekend’s outages, we will be re-architecting our OSPF domains.  This could cause intermittent outages of 30 seconds to 5 minutes over the course of this window.

By the end of this outage we will have improved network performance, implemented backup routing architecture to avoid issues in the future, and integrated our new border router.

DreamHost: Tirane Hardware Failure

Server, Tirane, just took a dive and appears to have suffered major hardware failure (likely the motherboard).  We are in the process of failing over the machine now, and will post updates as they are available.  Thanks for your patience while we get you back up and running.

Update: By way of some devilishly clever troubleshooting by our NOC team (thanks Robert!), we were able to avoid a complete failover, as it was determined that a single faulty hard drive was preventing the entire machine from powering on.  How about ‘dem apples?  In any case, the machine is back up with a new drive in that slot, and the RAID array is rebuilding.   Thanks for your patience!   Phew!

DreamHost: Networking issues

We are currently experiencing service interruptions across our entire network in the form of time outs and connectivity problems. We’ve also seen reports of payment processing issues (thanks to failed connections with our upstream providers).

Our networking expert is investigating and we’ll post further details as they become available. We apologize for the trouble this causes.

Update, 13:25 PM PST: We are still experiencing a bit of fallout. Currently one of our data centers is unable to connect to the server which houses dreamhoststatus and one of our name servers (ns2.dreamhost.com) but our LAX facility can. We experienced a complete outage from roughly 12:50 to 13:05.

Our networking expert has narrowed the problem down to changes we were attempting to implement last night and is still working on a complete rollback fix. More updates to follow.

Update, 14:05 PM PST: Our networking expert has rolled back the changes and service should be fully restored.

DreamHost: New Transit for LAX! New border router for LAX!

We will be turning up a shiny, new transit link with AboveNet for our LAX data center tonight at 22:00 PDT.  We will also be rolling out a new border router.  This should improve latency for our LAX data center and provide fail-over capacity for our entire network.  We will no longer have our trusty downtown border router carrying the entire load and can eliminate this as a single point of failure scenario from our contingency planning.

This roll out will culminate a year-long initiative to improve our network and increase our capacity.

We anticipate no interruption of service during this maintenance window. But, as with all core and border architectural changes, that possibility exists.  Please plan accordingly.  If you do observe an outage, please contact your Happy Dreamhost Technical Service representative immediately.

DreamHost: Apache (and site) downtime

We starting having problems with our apaches exhausting semaphores around 11:00 AM PST today but we were able to clear those out by around noon. Unfortunately we are now seeing another round of affected apache servers and so we are working on cleaning those up as well. We expect to be finished in the next hour or so with that clean up.
